‘I want to stay living here for a long time’

26/07/2022

17 Tower Hamlets residents have moved into new affordable homes for rent in Aberfeldy Village.

The new homes, a mix of 1-4 bedroom apartments and maisonettes, marks a total of 39 new homes for affordable rent completed by EcoWorld London and Poplar HARCA, in Aberfeldy, this year.

Lutfur Rahman, Mayor of Tower Hamlets and Councillor Kabir Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, were warmly welcomed by the new residents when they visited Aberfeldy to celebrate the handover of the new homes, in June.

Mohamed Hassan, a Tower Hamlets resident of 24 years, previously lived in a bedsit on the neighbouring Teviot estate. Mr Hassan said:

“I went to have a look at my new flat and loved it straight away. I want to stay living here for a long time.  It’s very spacious and on the ground floor which is better for me because I have a medical condition which makes using stairs difficult.

I have a separate bedroom and a patio, so I can sit outside and living in a bigger property, I don’t have to cram my belongings in anymore.

My niece happens to live in Aberfeldy Village too, so it’s great to have my family close by.”

Farhad Chowdhury and her family loved their former home on Cordelia Street, Poplar but were overcrowded. Mrs Chowdhury said:

“I really like living in Aberfeldy Village. Our home is beautiful and the rooms are a good size. The best things for my family are that we feel safe here and our neighbours say hello every morning.  My friend said ‘Your home feels like a hotel!’  I think she’s after an invite to stay over!”

Lutfur Rahman, Mayor of Tower Hamlets said:

“We started this journey on Aberfeldy a decade ago and it is brilliant to see everything that has taken shape over the past 10 years. It’s not only much-needed new homes, but also improvements to community spaces and facilities. Working with partners across the borough we are going to make Tower Hamlets a better place to live for everyone.”

A spokesperson for EcoWorld London and Poplar HARCA, said:

“We are delighted to bring much needed new homes for affordable rent as part of the regeneration on Aberfeldy, and see the life-changing impact it is already making on the community. A decade since we founded the partnership, we are more determined than ever to deliver more new affordable homes and create better places for the residents of Tower Hamlets.”
